Organic coffee is produced without the use of artificial chemical substances, such as pesticides and herbicides. This allows for cleaner air, water, land and animals (including us!), and, of course, cleaner beans. The National Organic Standards Board states, "Organic food handlers, processors and retailers adhere to standards that maintain the integrity of organic agricultural products. The primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people."
Although coffee is the second most highly traded commodity in the world, many growers receive drastically low prices for their crop, crippling their chances to obtain basic nutrition, education, health care, and sanitation. Fairly traded coffee, however, enables farming communities to obtain a livable wages for their crop. We are committed to purchasing only fairly traded coffees, believing in the importance of sustainable farming methods and stable social environments for our growers.
Shade-grown and bird friendly, our coffee grows beneath a level of canopy cover rather than on farms that have been cleared of vegetation. This canopy cover maintains a habitat for birds and other wildlife while our delicious coffee beans grow underneath, the first step in allowing us to caffeinate responsibly.
SWISS WATER PROCESSED
Complimenting our organic certification, we are proud to be a registered roaster of Swiss Water Processed decaf coffee. Swiss Water is the only decaffeination process achieved without the use of chemicals. In fact, the only substance to touch our beloved beans is pure water. Beans are soaked in it, allowing their caffeine to be pulled out and filtered away, leaving tasty beans ready to roast
